FAQs

What's the difference between Medical Massage Therapy versus General Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy varies significantly in purpose and practice. Understanding these differences can help you choose the right type of treatment for your needs.

Medical Massage Therapy: focuses on addressing specific medical conditions and injuries. It aims to alleviate pain, promote healing, and improve physical function through specialized techniques like trigger point therapy and myofascial release. Practitioners are licensed therapists with advanced training certifications and often collaborate with healthcare providers to create individualized treatment plans for chronic pain, sports injuries, and post-surgery recovery. Whereas,
General Massage Therapy on the other hand, is centered on relaxation and overall well-being. It includes methods such as Swedish and hot stone massages, primarily targeting stress relief and muscle tension.

Both types of massage can be beneficial, but they serve different needs. Choose medical massage for therapeutic outcomes or general massage for stress relief and relaxation.

Is Medical Massage Therapy covered by insurance?

In North Carolina, medical massage therapy may be covered by some insurance companies, but coverage can vary based on the specific policy, the patient's medical condition, and the type of provider delivering the treatment. Here’s a comprehensive understanding of medical massage therapy coverage by insurance companies in the state:

Medical Necessity:
- Insurance companies generally require that medical massage therapy be deemed "medically necessary" for coverage. This typically means that the treatment must be related to a specific medical condition, injury, or post-surgical recovery.

Provider Requirements:
- Coverage may depend on whether the massage therapist is licensed and certified, and whether they are working under a physician's referral. In some cases, the therapist may need to have specialized training in therapeutic techniques.

Consultation with Healthcare Providers:
- Insurance companies often require documentation from a physician or qualified healthcare provider to support the necessity of massage therapy. This documentation may include treatment plans, medical records, and the expected benefits of therapy.

Types of Insurance Plans:
- Not all insurance plans cover medical massage therapy. Comprehensive plans, especially those with a focus on rehabilitation or complementary care, are more likely to provide coverage. Always check with your specific insurer regarding the details of your plan.

Referral Process:
- Patients may need a referral from their healthcare provider to access massage therapy benefits. It’s important to confirm whether a referral is needed before scheduling appointments.

Pre-authorization:
- Some insurance companies may require pre-authorization before beginning medical massage therapy. This process involves submitting relevant documentation for approval before treatment starts.

Limitations and Caps:
- Insurance coverage may have limitations on the number of sessions approved, specific therapeutic techniques covered, and time frames in which treatment must be completed. It’s essential to understand these limitations to avoid unexpected costs.

How do I verify insurance coverage for medical massage?

Check Your Insurance Policy/ Company:

Review your benefits handbook or call your insurance provider to understand your coverage for medical massage therapy.

Obtain a Physician’s Referral:

Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss the necessity of massage therapy and get a referral if required.

Out-of-Pocket Cost:
Even if massage therapy is covered, patients may still incur out-of-pocket costs, such as co-payments, deductibles, or fees for services not covered by insurance.

Keep Documentation:

Maintain records of all communication, referrals, and treatment plans to streamline the claims process and address any potential disputes.

*Medical massage therapy may be covered by insurance companies in North Carolina if it is deemed medically necessary and follows specific guidelines. It's important to verify your insurance coverage details, obtain necessary referrals, and communicate with both your healthcare provider and the massage therapist to ensure a smooth experience.
